Do disgraced stars cheapen reality shows?

Posted on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 in Uncategorized

Article in South Coast Todayjessica-sierra asking if having disgraced stars on reality TV shows cheapen them.  But that’s all it really does, is ask that question, then throws in some examples.  I was hoping for some analysis, but it’s more of a fluff piece used to work in the TV shows that will be on this week.

In my opinion, reality TV shows are already cheap, and most are misnamed.  They don’t portray anybodies reality, how could they with a bunch of cameras there and producers coming up with ideas to get ratings?  Now some of them aren’t just attention whore for the sake of attention.  I think American Chopper tries, or at least tried, to be true, but even they have strayed from the attention and fame.  They wouldn’t be doing all those famous bikes every week if it wasn’t for the show, and I doubt they would take as many field trips if they weren’t being filmed.  I’m not saying it’s bad, but it isn’t reality as you and I think about it.  The only way to get true reality would be to film without the participants knowing about it ( see The Truman Show ) and that’s not really going to work out too well, now is it?    I guess the closest we come now would be COPs.  Don’t get me started on Dog the Bounty Hunter, an excellent example of reality gone awry.
